How to water well?

All plants need water; but not at the same rate or in the same quantities. It is essential to wait until they are thirsty to provide them with water. Just like us, they should not be hydrated constantly but only when they need it. Before providing any irrigation, it is necessary to have a re-soiled soil (the latter must have lost its excess water). Be sure to choose the most suitable watering method for your crops: by sprinkling, drip, watering can or hose ...

Watering by sprinkling or at the base of plants?

If sprinkling water can cover a large area at once, it promotes the development of leaf diseases. Irrigation at the base of the plants is therefore recommended. Prefer the use of the watering can rather than the hose, which has the disadvantage of bringing too much water. The nature of the soil must also be taken into account. Moisture is quickly absorbed by sandy soil, while in clay soil it can stagnate at the roots and cause rot.

Save water

Hoeing reduces watering. This is to scrape the soil on the surface to prevent a crust from forming, and allow the soil to be adequately aerated. You can also carry out a mulching, which consists of covering the soil with a light material at the foot of the plant in order to limit evaporation to the soil.

Know when to water

Southern plants are more drought tolerant than northern varieties. Observe if the leaves of your plants fold back. If so, it's time to water them. It is also possible to rely on a rain gauge to assess the amount of water naturally supplied to plants during the night. Finally, be aware that you should always bring a little less water than too much water to your garden.
