Are you going to adopt a dog? Rather than wandering the shelves of a pet store looking for the perfect leash, why not make it yourself? A comfortable loop for delicate hands, solid fastenings so that the dog can pull on the leash without risk, and voila! Today we are going to learn how to create a trendy and solid leash, which will brighten up all your walks, even in the rain!
- A braided cotton rope with 3 strands, 12 mm diameter and 2 meters minimum (to be adjusted according to the length of leash desired) - Paper tape - A carabiner for a dog leash - Scraps of synthetic leather for the finishes - Thread - A needle - Dye - 400 g of coarse salt - Two basins - Household gloves
Budget: around 20 euros Duration: one day
/ Cut your rope to the desired length. Remember to add 50 cm to form the loop and 30 cm for the knot at the carabiner. Tape the ends to prevent the cord from becoming loose and unraveling.
/ To have a nice colored leash, we will dye the rope. Equipped with gloves, pour 5 to 7 liters of very hot water (about 60 °) in a basin. Then add 400g of coarse salt and empty the dye and fixative trays. Stir well so that everything is well dissolved. Wet the cord with hot tap water. Dip one end of the rope (about 40 cm) into the dye basin. Make the dye penetrate well into the fibers. Take the rope out again, place it in the second bowl and wait 10 minutes before repeating the operation. Each time, dive an additional twenty centimeters. The already colored part will take on a darker color, creating a tie and die effect. Finally, rinse the cord with cold water until the water becomes clear. Let dry out of the sun.
/ To form the loop, we will make a splice, a knot that is usually used to moor boats. Tape each of the 3 strands forming the rope to prevent it from fraying. Then untwist the rope about twenty centimeters.
/ Prevent the rope from becoming more untwisted by tying the 3 strands together. Locate the second end of your loop with tape.
/ We can now start to create the knot. For easier identification, you can write down the number of strands (1, 2, 3) on the tape. Insert strand # 1 into the rope, passing it under strand # A, in the opposite direction of braiding the rope.
/ In the same way as for the previous step, pass the strand 2 under the strand B. It must pass over the strand A.
/ Turn the rope over and locate strand C.
/ Pass the strand 3 under the strand C. Pay attention to the direction! Then tighten.
/ At this stage, this is what your rope should look like: the strands must be distributed regularly, separated by strands A, B and C.
/ We continue the braiding in the same way: locate strand 1, passed under strand A. Pass it under strand C, passing over No. B.
/ Tighten. The loop is starting to take shape!
/ Take the following strand (n ° 2, which goes under strand B) and start the operation again: pass strand 2 above strand C and below strand A. Tighten.
/ Turn the rope over. Locate strand 3, which goes under strand C. Pass it under strand B and above strand A and tighten.
/ Your knot is taking shape! After passing the 3 strands (n ° 1, 2 and 3), you must always obtain a regular distribution of the strands.
/ Continue in the same way this "reverse braiding" until the end and remove the scotch tape.
/ Slide the carabiner into the rope and repeat steps 3 and 4.
/ Repeat steps 5 to 15 to create a splice again and secure the carabiner.
/ You now have an almost ready leash!
/ Tape the end of the knot to prevent it from unraveling. For the finishes, cut two rectangles of synthetic leather with a length of 15 cm by 6 cm (the strip should be wide enough to cover the end of the knot).
/ Fold the synthetic leather over itself to create a 5 mm wide rim. Sew on both lengths, by hand or by machine.
/ Make 4 points to adjust the length and place the leather at the level of the finish to be created.
/ Sew by hand, as close as possible to the rope, to hold the leather band securely.
/ The first finish is done! You can customize it by writing with a marker on the ledge. For example, write your dog's name.
/ Repeat operations 19 to 23 to finish the carabiner. And there you are, you're ready to go for a ride!
You can now go for a walk and walk proudly with your dog and his new leash! Do not hesitate to adapt the tutorial. For example, I made a second very long leash - and in less than an hour! - with a natural rope. It is the essential accessory to teach the recall to his dog or for long walks in the countryside.
